We have decided as a department that the only time we permit students to switch days for their labs would be for illness (since we're eating what you make, please stay home when you are ill) and if they have a school approved field trip. I explained this to all of my sections on the first day of class.
Yesterday I had a student come to me as we were beginning in the lab to say she was from the Friday section but was coming on Wednesday because she wasn't going to be able to be there on her assigned lab day. First I reminded her that she should have gotten permission before she just decided to make the switch and show up. Then I asked why she would not be able to attend on her appointed day. I wondered if she was planning to be ill or if she had some school activity she needed to attend. I had to ask her at least twice why she would not be there. After some reluctance she finally told me that the reason she was not going to be able to attend the lab was because she wanted to share her French Bread loaf with her husband and he was not going to be home on Friday.
What? Well I explained that she would not be getting credit for her lab attendance because it was not excused and she said (with a huff in her voice), "Do you mean that I have to come to that lab too?" Well yes, if you want credit. I hope they enjoyed her bread.
