This week in fundamentals my students had an assignment to write a brief report on one kitchen staple and then make a 5 minute presentation on what they learned. I had been very specific with them that I required them to be in complete compliance with the dress and grooming code the day they were to speak in front of the class. One of my favorite students came to class Wednesday (ready to give his presentation) with several days growth on his face. I took him aside and asked if he was planning to make his presentation that day, to which he answered, "Yes." I asked if he remembered my instructions about grooming and he told me he could not remember (I had reminded them just the class time before and told them that I would not let them speak in front of the class if they came inappropriately dressed or groomed). I explained again what I required and that I could not let him give his report. He hung his head, told me he was sorry and went on into the kitchen to do his competencies. I hated being put in that position but felt that I must do what I had told them I would. It was not a good day for me.
